The El Amarillo Hanging Glacier
The El Amarillo Hanging Glacier is 30 kilometers from Yelcho en la Patagonia on the Carretera Austral and can be explored on foot or on horseback (horses can be rented in the Amarillo together with a Guide). This glacier is yet another fantastic example of Patagonia’s frozen mountain ranges.
The trail starts 10 kilometers from the base of the glacier with an uphill walk through a dense, indigenous forest. The path then clears as you reach a valley at the source of the Amarillo River. You can definitely expect to see a wide variety of birds and wildlife. Keep an eye out for the Pudu, the world’s smallest deer!
Following the riverbank you’ll eventually cross its waters before arriving at the retreating ice sediment which lies at the base of the glacier. From here, you’ll be able to marvel at the solid ice glacier that descends from the summit of the Michinmahuida Volcano; a truly unforgettable Chilean experience.
