Chaitén, now the capital of the Palena province, was turned into a ghost town after the region’s infamous volcano erupted in May 2008. The eruption caused the Blanco River to overflow, which fundamentally destroyed 80% of the original town. Remainders of its typical regional architecture are still visible as you explore the wide roads of this once thriving town. Although a major setback for Chaitén, the widespread damage has been no match for the resilient spirit of its people. They are slowly and proudly rebuilding the infrastructure and reestablishing some of the former services.
